ZoniX – Z80 Based System

Description

ZoniX is my first Z80 based design with ECB and 40 pins expansion bus. This design aimed to be a retro game console (I hope), for now I will use this platform to learn the designing process and assembly language.

The ZoniX system will be spread across multiple ecb board to help with the development.

Details

Wanted Features
- Z80 CPU ~ 10Mhz
- Use the Z84C90 KIO for Serial/Parallel Counter Timer to reduce chips count
- I/O ports for controllers and keyboard
- VGA output
- Memory map that allow for graphics expansion
- Add an external Bus for expansion in the future
- First 16k of the memory can be switch between ROM and RAM
- External ROM cartridge OR Compact Flash OR even better a SC card ?

First PCB batch received! Next steps are to finish soldering the parts and start testing.

After a few months troubleshooting my first prototype I want to move forward with a real PCB, the only problem was that I had no idea how to design a PCB correctly.. I learn that in the last during the holydays and now I'm confident that I can go forward with a PCB.
I ordered my first batch of 5 PCB today, now I need to prepare a backplane to connect my board in to.
Now on Hackaday :D

I started this project in august 2020 as my first Z80 based computer design but the only place it was published was on my wordpress. I want to share my project and what I learn so I think Hackaday will be better going forward ! :)
