8mm Film Scanner V2

Description

This project is based on the original 8mm Film Scanner https://hackaday.io/project/167426-8mm-film-scanner.
I branched it out due to incompatibility of the new components to the old design.
V2 will have several improvements over the original film scanner. The aim is to make it easier to print and build, increase the performance by using a Raspberry Pi 4 and the optional use of a HQ camera module.

All changes are in an early phase and need to still be tested. I'll post the files for the parts here once they work.

Details

The new mount plate comes with various improvements. The rolls are now mounted with 3mm screws instead of the previous 3d printed parts and no nuts are used. They also have now handles so its easier to lift them up when loading a film.

The roll that detects the status of the winded up part of the film can now be moved in a larger angle and also has a handle.

The rolls themselves have a clear position for the bearings. The film clearer is more robust than the previous version. I printed the plate itself in PETG, the movable parts in PLA. All with a 0.4mm nozzle, so it should be easy for everyone to print.

Important note:

The mount plate V2 is not compatible with the version 1 of the scanner. I've added a compatible version.

I've used PETG for the mount plate and PLA for the rest - all printed with a 0.4mm nozzle.

the front case needed complete redesign to make space for a larger 5 inch HDMI display.

the buttons are now below the display. The cover is printed in one piece, including the buttons. Only a color change was done after the first three layers.

In order to provide cooling to the Raspberry Pi 4, the new design has space for a cpu cooling fan. The GPIO assignment is new - so it is not compatible with the software of the original scanner.
It also includes now a switch to toggle between S8 and R8.

Hi, this is a very nice project. I have a collection R8 and S8 films from my father and grandfather which wait to be digitized. I already ordered several parts like gears, magnets etc. Not all is clear, like which parts from v1 are to be printed. Is it possible to share a recent STEP file? That way I can inspect in 3d how things fit together.

scan my 60 years old 8mm Regular films.

I had some problems along the way, but mostly with the software, and that lead me to starting my own software project:

Hello Anton, Have you considered making a gate and other components for 16mm film? I have an extensive collection of 16mm films that I would like to digitize, I have been collecting parts for quite some time and I think I have everything I need, I have an ArduCam 16meg camera with autofocus that is able to focus well on a 16mm frame of film. I have stepper motors and Arduinos/Raspberry Pi's. I have an FLA printer and two resin printers. I do not know how to use 3D design software good enough to create something like your project. I am trying to learn Blender 3D.

Hi Anton! As I wrote you on the original film scanner webpage I will try to use Arduino, my computer and the core of your fine project. I downloaded the .step file of your V1 scanner and I took a look at it with Fusion 360.
It seams that an 8mm film thickness is 0.15mm, a cement splice 0.3mm. What about enlarging the gap between the film plate and the the camera rail to, say, at least 0.45mm? That would give some extra space for the splice, and I am thinking of something to gently press down the film. I am making some modifications on the film plate and I will share it so you can take a look at it, if you will.

Hi again! I have maide some modiffications as suggestions:

1- The gap between the film plate and the camera lens rail enlarged to 0.45mm.

2- Two "craisy" ways to press the film down on the film plate: one uses a 3mm LED, as it has a polished rounded lens; the other uses a ski/sled. Both with a 3x8x4 ballbearing as weight.

I have used the version 1 .step file just as reference.

I have not 3D printed then, they are just suggestions to be considered or not.

I just wanted to say that you are doing an amazing job and I'm excited for the new version! I just started getting back into shooting super 8 and I have been looking for scanning solutions.
