First repair
10/20/2024 at 12:24 • 0 commentsToday the display started showing garbage and the clock wasn't advancing. *#@! I thought, has the MCU gone haywire? Do I have to reflash it?
Opening it up and measuring the voltage after the rectifier gave a value of about 5.5 V where normally about 7 V would be expected. I attached a scope and the huge 100 Hz ripple was evident. No way the MCU could work properly with periodic dips in the voltage after the LDO regulator. The electrolytic capacitor had gone kaput of course, either the ESR went skyhigh or the capacitance dropped. A replacement brought the ripple down to expected levels and the clock worked again. Phew! One less
junkspare part to use up.
