Nectar Nest - The First True 3D Hive for Honey Pro

A fully modular beehive, designed for FDM 3D printing with thermal-insulating sandwich walls and IoT monitoring

Similar projects worth following
Nectar Nest is a modular beehive system fully designed for large-format FDM 3D printing.
The goal is to provide beekeepers, makers, and researchers with a flexible, affordable, and replicable hive that combines the tradition of Langstroth-style beekeeping with the possibilities of digital fabrication.

Key features:

  • 🧱 Sandwich walls: 20 mm thick, with two 1.6 mm outer skins and a 5% gyroid infill for insulation.

  • 🔄 Modular design: Brood box, super, cover, roof — all stackable and combinable.

  • 🐝 Anti-varroa bottom with removable tray and metal mesh slot.

  • 🌡️ Weather-resistant PETG: food-safe, UV stable, and printable on consumer-grade machines.

  • 📡 IoT expansion: ESP32 LoRa sensors for temperature, humidity, and hive health monitoring.

  • 🌍 Maker-friendly: Designed for printers with 420×420 mm beds (e.g., Neptune 4 Max, Anycubic Kobra 3 Max, etc.).

Details

The complete assembled hive measures 41 × 41 × 70 cm and accommodates standard Langstroth-compatible frames (10 per brood/super box).

Main Components

  • Bottom board: Varroa-counting tray + mesh insert.

  • Brood chamber: Made of base adapter + honey super.

  • Honey super: Can be used standalone or stacked.

  • Escape board: Optional bee escape separator.

  • Inner cover: Space for feeder insert.

  • Roof: Insulating with chimney-effect air vents.

  • It’s almost here: Our 3D-printed modular beehive goes live on Kickstarter November 4th!

    Hi everyone!

After months of design, prototyping, field testing and feedback, we’re excited to officially announce the launch date of our project:

👉 Nectar Nest — the first modular beehive fully designed for 3D printing
📅 LIVE on Kickstarter: November 4th

In this video, you'll get a full preview of how the hive works, how it’s built, and what makes it special — from snap-fit assembly to gyroid-insulated walls and stackable modules.

We’ll be offering: 🔹 STL packs for makers
🔹 Fully printed hives (EU/UK shipping only for now)
    🔹 Exclusive early bird rewards

Would love your feedback, thoughts or questions — and of course, feel free to hit the “Notify me” button if you want to follow the campaign!

  • Log 5 — Towards Crowdfunding

    Diego09/17/2025 at 19:34 0 comments

We’re preparing a Kickstarter launch (Nov 2025) with multiple reward tiers:

    • 🖥️ Digital Maker Pack (STL files)

    • 🐝 Hive Ready Pack (fully printed hive)

    • 🔧 Innovator Pack (printed hive + STL files)

    • 🌍 Future “Merchant License” tiers for resellers

  • Log 4 — IoT Sensor Integration

    Diego09/17/2025 at 19:33 0 comments

An optional ESP32 LoRa module with BME680 sensors monitors temperature, humidity, and air quality. The idea is to connect hives into a global open-data network for research and beekeeping optimization.

  • Log 3 — Large-Format Printing Challenges

    Diego09/17/2025 at 19:33 0 comments

The hive was intentionally designed to fit monolithic printing on 420×420 mm plates to avoid seams and assembly joints. We’re testing slicing strategies (Cura profiles, adaptive layers) to optimize print times.

  • Log 2 — Testing PETG for Outdoor Use

    Diego09/17/2025 at 19:33 0 comments

PETG was chosen over PLA/ABS for its UV stability, impact resistance, and food-safety. Initial prototypes were left outdoors to verify durability through seasonal changes.

  • Log 1 — Design of Sandwich Walls

    Diego09/17/2025 at 19:32 0 comments

We designed 20 mm thick walls with a gyroid infill core. This keeps the hive lightweight yet insulated, combining thermal protection for the bees with reduced plastic consumption.
