Nix Robot

This is a bipedal robotic system. A semi-humanoid machine with legs only. It features various gaits and cool moves.

This project began as an academic one at Columbia University. Later, the new gait and other moves were developed. Initial design and goal was aimed at walking, but unexpectedly the machine is capable of rising from the floor after falls, sit and stand up, kneel, turn, slide, kick, etc.
I first built this robot with a speaker and a microphone. Then I changed the speaker to an ultrasonic sensor, and added an accelerometer for body angle detection.
The machines uses the following electrical components: LX-16A servos, Arduino or Raspberry Pi development board, a 6-7V power source (e.g. a 12V battery with a voltage converter).
Now, anyone can build this robot again because I published a detailed manual. Some peope already built their own versions of Nix Robot.

To build a robot, one first needs a design. And design can define almost everything. A good design makes your system universal and reliable. A bad one makes it fragile and broken.

But for the Nix Robot, if you wish to make your own version, the design is free to use. I published all 3D files, both STEP and STL for anyone to use on GrabCAD. here is the link to grab them: https://grabcad.com/library/nix-robot-1

After the design in CAD, you just 3D print it and assemble. But here comes some nuances: positioning motors, cables, and components often require precision and specific fasteners. Not that hard, though.

The last this is programming. Here, despite of having AI, most difficulties come. Nix Robot can do many moves. But all its source code is now non-published. You can write your own code or get the downloadable content: all source files with this book: a complete building and programming guide.

Why is the code closed? It is a had job to produce the code, as well as the detailed building instructions with drawings and schematics. This work deserves some reward.

  • 8 × LX-16A Servomotor Serial Bus Servo
  • 1 × Bus Linker for LX-16A Also known as TTL / USB Debugging Board
  • 1 × Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 Development Board - No Arduino needed if RPi is used
  • 1 × Arduino UNO Development Board - Completely replaces Raspberry Pi
  • 1 × Talentcell Battery YB1203000-USB 3000mAh, DC 12V/5V
