This project isn't a particularly original idea. It used to be a common hack back in the days when cars didn't have garage door openers built in. But it took me a while to work though the details, and that's what's documented here in the project logs.
The Nissan LEAF 2026 model is a new generation for the line, so information about previous model years often does not apply at all. Because sales are relatively modest compared to other cars, practical information about internals is thin on the ground. You can't just buy a service manual for this car. You have to subscribe to an online service to use it. I thought about doing that, but I decided to hold off in case I got really stuck. Thankfully, I didn't get really stuck.
Along the way, I had some conversations with Gemini AI about it. Asking an AI about things can be a bit like asking for advice from people in a neighborhood bar. They're always ready to offer more advice than you asked for, they sound confident in what they are saying, and what they say will often be wrong in small or large ways. They often tell you accurate information about a thing you do not have. But, overall, it was more helpful than harmful in this case.
