Creating Funny/Tools Hands

Shiva hands is a project in which we are attempting to build different funny hands and tools. These are going to be various attachments for the Bionico hand.

The Bionico hand comprises of three parts. The socket, the wrist and the the hand. The wrist connects the hand to the socket. The wrist is made of two parts which can be connected by just sliding them together.

We have built the funny hands on the half of the wrist that will be attached to the hand. After the funny hand is built, we can easily just slide the two parts of the wrist together connecting the funny hand with the socket.

So instead of making a whole hand for a particular funny hand we just have to build the hand and it easily fits on the Bionico arm because of the design of the wrist.

We are building the following funny hands:

1- A mobile phone holder with a laser pointer holder.

2- A mosquito swatter holder.

3- A Guitar plectrum holder. 

4- A nerf gun attachment.

    Today we dismantled the nerf gun and hacked it be able to be fired from the sensor in the socket

    Our prototypes for the swatter holder, the mobile and laser holder, and the guitar plectrum holder is ready!

    At the end of day 2 we are ready with:

    1- Mosquito swatter.

    2- Guitar plectrum assist.

    3- Laser pointer.

    The guitar assist has been 3D printed and works! Nico is able to play the guitar with the help of the guitar assist.

    Its day 2 in the afternoon. We have finished 3D printing the mobile holder and the mosquito swatter. 

    The swatter and the laser pointer holder have been painted.

    We have created the circuit for the swatter to be controlled by the IR sensor.

    We bought a mobile holder and designed an attachment to house the mobile holder which will be 3D printed and fitted onto the socket. 

    The attachment will also house the laser pointer holder at the back. We plan to fix the laser pointer holder with the help of adhesive.

    On day 2 we begin with:

    1- Trying to complete the circuit that will connect the funny hands to the sensor in the socket.

    2- Dismantling the nerf gun to figure out a way to attach it to the socket.

    3- Designing the mobile phone holder. 

    4- working on designing a wrist for Mahen.

    Our teams started working on designing a holder to house the laser pointer. after some discussions and design thinking we have created a final design for the holder. This attachment has a slot in which the laser pointer would slide into.

    The design is ready and is being 3D printed.

    Our electronic team has been working on the circuit that will help control the mosquito racket using the sensor in the socket.

    We had some intense discussions on the design of the the squatter holder. The confusion was weather to keep the handle of the the racket or to make a smaller module to house the circuit.

    A decision was made to keep the handle and design a holder that would balance the racket on the arm. 

    Our team went on and made the required holder in time and it has been sent for printing now.

    Then we hacked the racket and removed the switch that is used to generate the spark used to kill the mosquitos.

    We pulled out two wires that would we connected to the sensor in the arm. The sensor will provide a high and low signal that would control the spark of the racket.

    IR SENSOR CIRCUIT

    The battery used in the socket of the hand gives an output of ~7 volts. This supply is given to the voltage regulator LM2596S, which is adjusted (by calibrating the potentiometer) accordingly to give a constant output of 5 Volts.

    IR SENSOR CIRCUIT

    We need 5 volts to trigger the relay switch VMA406 and the IR sensor QRE1113 (digital version). Placing the IR sensor on the prosthetic arm where the impact of the muscle movement is maximum, the output of the IR sensor (when the muscle is flexed the most) is fed to the relay switch

    IR SENSOR CIRCUIT

    The circuit for the appliance such as a swatter or laser light will be put in between the NC and the common terminals of the VMA406 to act as a switch to turn on/off the circuit.

    When the muscle is flexed the most, the IR sensor will turn off the relay switch (which is by default ON) and the squatter or the laser light is turned on and stays in that state as long the muscle is flexed. Once the muscle is relaxed, the swatter/laser light is turned off.
