RGB 16 Segment LED

one does not simply order 50 ws2812b LEDs and has a 3D printer at home

Similar projects worth following
I saw rgb 7 segment displays once, it was beautiful.

it's 80x100mm

23 leds means buy 100 get 4 digits - nice!

My ascii 'little a' is 98, according to my array. Not sure why. But here we have: text! Finally - before I was running the demo script from adafruit.io, that surely looked nice.

I wanted to power my arduino and the wsb2812bs from the same source when running, but didn't want to kill my usb port when programming, so I used some diodes from a rectifier.

Black plastic was by choice, I was afraid of color bleeding, if I print in white. I added a coat of primer spray and will later spray it white for highest reflectance. Not sure about the toplayer yet. Might print something with z-glass from zortrax finally.

Great project! I have a similar one but only for 7 segment. Did you write software for Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

I'm thinking of building a similar display with APA102 2020 size... Should be a fun journey!

Hey Maksim, thanks! The software runs on an Arduino, but with wiringpi it should run on a pi as well.

Sounds like a cool project, those 2020s look very nice!

Mike, you have to see them in real life!

Damn fine project! I thought my upcoming 60x30mm RGB 7 segment would be unique, but yours looks amazing.

How much space is between the LEDs and the front? As I've got no 3D printer I am building my version with laser-cutted parts.

Yay, thanks! it can't be much more than a centimeter (checked, it is). The display itself is 10x8 cm2.

if you have to decide because between 3mm and 4mm and between 8 and 12  resulting in 9 or 12mm, take twelve.

Saw this in real life.  The paint job works perfectly as a reflector. It is beautiful!

Nice Progress!

But i really wonder how the Back of the Digit looks after you soldered it ;)

ahh, you want to see the dirty details, don't you? I wanted to have something to show on saturday, so I rushed the prototype :)

Now let's make equivalent of 16x2 character LCD made of those displays!

that's gonna be slightly pricey :D

Hmm... you could display whole words by having each letter a different color, and blending them... I wonder if you could "scroll" them by moving each of them through the hue...
